Why invest in a Vapour Recovery Unit?

During the past 30 years Vapour Recovery Units (VRU) have emerged as successful technology in the US and Scandinavia. For good reason too. VRUs reduce the emissions of environmentally hazardous substances, reduce the safety risks, and reduce significant losses of valuable resources. In normal circumstances, a gasoline terminal will have an average recovery potential of approx. 1,500 litres of gasoline for every 1,000m³ of transferred product.

Another important aspect is the implementation of the EU directive 94/63EG, which is coming into force in more and more countries. The directive puts a cap on hydrocarbon emissions and therefore, emphasizes the importance of investing in a VRU. Payback time for VRUs is reasonable. Very often it is between 1 and 2 years.

There is no steam without technology

There are a variety of technologies for vapour recovery. These include:

Absorption with activated carbon
Cold liquid absorption
Cyro condensation
Membrane separation

The technology to be used depends upon the task at hand.

Depending on the technology and circumstances, a VRU can guarantee the following emissions standards:

35 g/m³ or 10 g/m³ of hydrocarbon emissions
150 mg/m³
50 mg/m³ (“TA-Luft 2002” German regulations for emission to the air)

 Availability

The average availability of our VRUs is over 98%. Our VRUs are built from solid components and are designed to work under the most demanding conditions. They are user friendly, reliable, and based on proven technology. We also offer a well organized spare parts service.

Short construction times and seamless operation

The VRUs are delivered as packaged skid mounted items, are easy and quickly constructed and brought into operation by our engineers. The advanced control system which logs a large number of process parameters ensure that our VRUs are easy to monitor while in operation.

In the unlikely event that the system needs to be adjusted, we can examine and diagnose a VRU over a normal telephone line. Marcon also offers a regular service package.

 Activated carbon for safety

The safety of our VRUs is a number 1 priority. For this reason our VRUs are designed around the mineral-based activated carbon an extremely safe and effective material. In addition our highly advanced control system monitors all the important processes and will automatically shut off the VRU in the event of any system failure.

VRUS are also becoming a standard feature at marine terminals as an increasing number of countries and organizations (UNE-ECE, US, EPA, International Maritime Organization) have decided to reduce hydrocarbon emissions in the transfer of crude oil.

Our VRUs for marine terminals stand out for their very high flow rate (e.g. 36,000 m³/h). The units are compact and can be installed on tankers or on land. If you are considering a VRU for marine use, do not hesitate to get in touch with us. We would be very happy to analyse your particular needs and design a custom made VRU for you (including delivery and assembly).
